Mhango in Africa volleyball committee

Volleyball Association of Malawi (VAM) president Jappie Mhango has added another feather to his sports administration cap following his election into the Confederation of African Volleyball (CAVB) events council at the weekend.

In being elected in absentia during the CAVB Board of Administration Meeting in Cairo, Egypt, on Saturday, Mhango joined officials charged with organising volleyball events across Africa.

“I am excited with the trust the leadership of CAVB has in me considering that only last December, I was elected treasurer for Zone VI in Sudan. This demonstrates the trust these people have in me,” Mhango said on Tuesday.

Probably the first Malawian to serve in the commission, Mhango may gain experience that could prove valuable to Malawi sports administration.

Mhango, who is also the Malawi Olympic Committee treasurer, will be working under the leadership of Lucbeau Kalala (DR Congo).

The Malawian gets to business from March 27 to April 8 when Kenya hosts African Women’s Clubs Championships in Nairobi. Then Tunisia hosts the men’s version of the competition from April 19 to 30, according to www.cavb.org.

The board in Cairo also decided to organise zonal qualifications for the first time during this year’s age group championships where teams that qualify from the zones are allowed to compete in the finals. The finals act as qualification round for corresponding Federation of International Volleyball (FIVB) World Championships.

There will be also zonal qualifications for the FIVB Youth and Junior Beach Volleyball World Championships as Africa has already acquired six vacancies in each of the competitions for both genders.
